About the museum

The story of the Netherlands is the story of water. For this nation, water was a bitter enemy, but water was also a source of trade and prosperity. Batavialand brings the struggle of the Dutch against water to life. It tells the story of land reclamation and dyke construction, but also of the voyages of discovery, overseas trade, and the specialist knowledge of shipbuilding and water management that the Netherlands exports. A 7,000-year history of life on the edge between land and water can be heard, seen, and experienced right here in Batavialand!
