  2. Audio tour Summary

The focus of this itinerary is the Island of Giudecca and will lead to the discovery of its history and traditions outwith the usual paths taken by mass tourism, and simultaneously welcome the visitor to one of Venice’s most characteristic islands. Strolling through its many lanes you will discover the buildings of the old workplaces and factories which characterised the island until the 1960s, as well as important traces of Venetian nautical traditions and boatbuilding yards which are still very much rooted here today. Indeed Giudecca is an island with an industrial past which has renewed itself in the last two decades after a difficult period of transition due to the disappearance of many of its work activities. You will visit several still operational boatyards, naval yards, and shipyards, the matrix from which Venice arose, building yards and laboratories which maintain the traditions and secrets of craftsmanship jealously handed down from generation to generation.
