Audio tour Summary
The covered passages of Brussels, Belgium, are a set of lanes drawn in the middle of buildings, most often housing commercial galleries.
Typically, Brussels covered walkways form galleries pierced through buildings or built at the same time as they. These galleries are covered by a glass roof with zenith lighting that gives them a special light.
Almost all of the covered passages are located near major roads, that is to say in the areas draining the wealthy clientele at the time of their construction.
Most of the passageways were built in the first half of the nineteenth century, to shelter a wealthy clientele from bad weather and to offer a variety of shops. Brussels will have up to 50 covered passages in the 1850s and will export the model to several other cities in Belgium.
