    A WORD FROM REGINA DOWNTOWN

At the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID), our job isn’t just business. Our job is to enrich the lives of everyone who lives, works and plays Downtown in ways that go far beyond commerce.

Pop Up Downtown is a great example of this. Pop Up Downtown, an initiative launched by Creative City Centre, is marking five years of bringing works of art to underused spaces in downtown Regina. This is the second year that RDBID has had the privilege of working with Creative City Centre on this outstanding project.

We were also pleased to include in this project the Dunlop Art Gallery, a RDBID member who proved to be natural fit for both our organizations. The support of our member businesses and organizations has been essential for the success of this project.

Ultimately, the credit for the quality of this installation rests with the artists themselves. Their work to explore the theme of Looking/Watching/Seeing challenges viewers to explore downtown in a revitalized way.

The theme of Looking/Watching/Seeing was chosen to encourage viewers to look at downtown Regina in new ways. No two days in downtown Regina are the same. As we go about our daily business, we take different paths and have unique encounters.  People come and go. Seasons change. Buildings are updated or removed. The changes never end.

These works of art convey only a small sample of the artistic experiences available in Regina. We’re hoping that, as people encounter the work of these artists, they feel it is something they would like to see more of in our community.

Our goal at RDBID is to make Downtown a welcoming space. That’s what Pop Up Downtown is about. It’s one more initiative that makes Regina’s downtown a more welcoming environment for everyone.

    LOOKING/WATCHING/SEEING

This Summer 2017, Dunlop Art Gallery is pleased to collaborate with RDBID to present Pop Up Downtown: Looking/Watching/Seeing. A vibrant contributor to the cultural life of downtown Regina, Dunlop Art Gallery’s mandate is to support the presentation of contemporary art in friendly and accessible ways. Dunlop Art Gallery is interested in positioning visual art in our community, particularly where people are gathered. Working with RDBID to present the artworks you will see downtown this summer is an exciting partnership and a natural fit.

Pop Up Downtown brings new works of contemporary art and new audiences for art together. The artists selected for this year’s edition of Pop Up Downtown are at various stages of their careers and have tackled this year’s theme, Looking/Watching/Seeing, from various angles. Whether you live in Regina or are just visiting, Pop Up Downtown provides an excellent peek into the kinds of artwork being made today, particularly showcasing artists who live within our community.

Through this initiative, Dunlop Art Gallery and RDBID provide a platform for artists to experiment with new ideas in novel ways. We also hope that by supporting artists in their creation of these projects and facilitating their presentation, we are helping viewers learn how to be open to multiple perspectives, and to see and think about the world in new ways.
