Über das Museum

The Archeological Museum of Massa Marittima developed as a section of the Civic Museum founded in 1867 by the Municipality of Massa Marittima. It became a museum in its own right between the 1960s and 1980s, and particularly from 1985 onwards, thanks to Progetto Etruschi, an archeological project created and promoted by the Region of Tuscany. During that year Palazzo del Podestà, headquarters of the Civic Museum, was completely renovated and committed to archeology with the exhibit on minerary Etruria. The territory of Massa Marittima is in fact at the heart of the Metalliferous Hills, rich with mines exploited since prehistory, particularly during Etruscan times.

Following the renovations made in the 2000s, the Archeological Museum of Massa Marittima currently offers a comprehensive view of the earliest history of the territory of Massa; the period spanning from prehistory, to which the whole first floor is dedicated, to the Etruscan era, when this territory was under the cultural and political influence of Vetulonia.
