You should now be standing in an elegant square with two fountains and a statue of a
man on horse back. This is the Praca dom Pedro IV, also known as Rossio.
This site was originally a Roman stadium used for horse and chariot races before it
became a market place. Over the centuries it’s also been used for parades, rallies,
festivals, bullfights and what was called an auto da fe, a religious inquisition at which
heretics were put on trial and some 2,000 of them were then burnt alive, near to where
you’re standing.
