The castle comprises the original enclosure of the medieval village of Montemor-o-Novo. The wall would have been built in the 13th century, during the reign of D. Dinis to defend its population during a period of great political instability and constant enemy attacks. At some point, the intramural village was even split into four parishes. However, from the moment the population stopped feeling the need for protection inside the walls, leaving the castle behind and settling on the northern slope became an inevitable trend. The land was no longer confined, it was abundant in water and had every advantage of being close to the main communication routes.
The tour we propose to you has the approximate length of a 1,5Km and starts in the former Church of Saint James / Interpretive Center of the Castle. It goes through the streets of the centuries-old intramural village and gives you a better understanding of both the past and the present of this place.
