The Songea Mbano’s grave yards stands at the burial place where Ngoni and Matengo ethnic group warriors were buried after being hanged on public on 27th February in 1906 just closer the far end of the mass grave behind the museum building the grave contains more than sixty individuals. Adjacent to it is the grave of the Ngoni sub-Chief Songea Mbano who was buried separately, and was hanged three days after the others. The ritual practices to appease the ancestors and social activities in the Museum compound since its beginning in 1980’s made the Maji Maji Museum to be really seen as an open air museum having the visible historical realities as a source of inspiration, research and renewal:
