Uleboerd
Old Frisian farms weren’t complete without an ‘ûleboerd’, or in English literally: ‘owl’s board’. It gets its name from the hole in the board, through which the owls can fly. The owls nest in the farmhouse and catch the mice inside.
The symbols on the ûleboerden differ by region. In South-West Friesland it has harp shape. The colour of the harp also carries a meaning: a farm with a green harp is owned by the farmer, whereas a white-coloured harp means the farmer leases the farm.
