Musée national d'histoire et d'art Luxembourg (MNHA)
Welcome to The National Museum of History and Art (MNHA)!
This is one of the few places on our tour that you can safely enter even in high heels, should you not have taken our advice about footwear seriously.
Check out the façade of this modern building! It has recently been refurbished and modernized to international standards, and is now welcoming us with its white stone façade polished to perfection, shining in the sun. This modern part of the building was added in 2002 and was designed by Christian Bauer. The very reason Luxembourg has a national museum of history and art is that back in mid 19th century, historians and archaeologists formed a society for preservation of historic monuments. The interest in preserving historic artifacts had increased after the independence of the Duchy due to the Treaty of London back in 1839 and the society got the means to collect important historical monuments in a museum.
But enough about the past! Let’s get in and have a closer look at what this fine museum has to offer today! Its collections feature artworks and artifacts from all epochs of Luxembourgian history, so the cultural journey we are going to experience here today is diverse and very interesting. We could start looking at the Gallo-Roman art, that goes back over 1000 years in history and displays coins, art and armors from this time. When finished let’s continue to the exhibition of the Fortress of Luxembourg, complete with models an all! When you feel like you’ve got a fair understanding of life in Luxembourg during the past 1000 years it’s time to move on to the gigantic library that belongs to the museum to see if we find something interesting amongst thousands of cultural books stored here. After spending some time at the book section it’s time to move on to the next stop of our tour!
