The museum is located in the best-known pharmacy of Cluj. The first public pharmacy opened around 1550, in one of the buildings around the main church (subsequently demolished). The city sold the pharmacy in the beginning of the 18th century and around 1760 the new owner, Tobias Mauksch, moved it to this house. The Mauksch-Hintz pharmacy functioned here for almost two hundred years, until the nationalization of 1949. The pharmacy museum opened in the rooms of the old pharmacy in 1954.
The recent renovation of the building, which is a historical monument, has revealed its complicated history. Two medieval houses were united, stables and servants annexes were built in the yard, and Roman ruins have been preserved in the basement.
The structure of the old pharmacy can be reconstructed. The Officina, where medicines were sold and where clients had access to, initially functioned in the room with the Baroque vault painting and then moved closer to the main square. The old Officina was converted into the pharmacist's office, where business was conducted. The storage room and the laboratory, still on the first floor, were reserved to the pharmacists and their assistants. The basement was used for storage and the attic for drying medicinal plants. The family lived on the upper floor, with the couple owning the pharmacy occupying the best suite, facing the square.
