Welcome to the Bergkerk. (Mountain church)
First, I would like to briefly tell you something about the history of the Mountain church.
The Mountain church, also known as the Saint Nicholas Church, has been an important part of the cityscape of Deventer for eight centuries.
Built between 1198 and 1209, the church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants and boatmen.
Originally a Romanesque cruciform basilica, the church underwent a renovation in the 15th century to its current Gothic form.
After the Reformation in 1580, the church was taken over by Calvinists and the Catholic interior was carefully removed.
The church was restored several times over the centuries, including a major restoration in 1915-1924 and recovery after the Second World War.
In 1967, the church lost its function as a house of worship and was sold to the municipality of Deventer for a symbolic guilder.
After renovations and adjustments, such as the installation of underfloor heating and a climate control system in 2016, the church is now used for exhibitions, meetings and concerts.
Start the walk at the wall to the right of the organ.
This is No. 1 on the map.
Walk clockwise through the church and follow the numbers on the map.
